　有力なワルラス派理論家で、経済学にいろいろ貢献しているけれど、その中で一つだけ、実に絶望的な結果のものが圧倒的に突出している。それはドブリュー・ソネンシャイン・マンテルの定理だ。これを最初に検討したのは、ソネンシャインの 2 論文 (1972, 1973) で、その後ドブリュー (1972) とマンテル (1974) が類似の論文を発表している。DSM 定理は、すべての市場レベルやマクロレベルの経済学の「直感的」な結果すべてが依存している市場の需要関数は、基本的に無定型だと主張している。これは要するに経済理論の「ミクロ的基礎づけ」プロジェクト、つまり需要と供給を分散化した効用最大化エージェントの結果（総和）として記述しようという試みを、基本的に破壊してしまった。DSM定理は以下の結果を示している：市場の全員がきれいな形の個別需要関数を持っていたとしても、市場全体の需要関数がきれいな形を取るとは言えないということだ。だから 20 世紀を通じて行われてきた、需要を効用最大化の結果として記述しようという試みは、すべて本質的に無駄だった――少なくとも望み通りの結果には至らない、ということになってしまう。

　ソネンシャインは現在、シカゴ大学総長だ (訳注：現在はすでに引退)。学術研究を離れて管理職につこうというかれの決断が、その有名な定理の持つがっかりするような意味合いと少しでも関連しているかどうかはわからない。
