The following is not a direct quote from Dylan, but is taken from a hilarious interview published in Quarterly Lumiere 2 (Winter 1985) by Baisho Mitsuko, who co-starred with Bob Dylan in 1982 during the shooting of a promotional video. The interviewers were Yamane Sadao and Hasumi Shigehiko.
Baisho: (Omitted) But, although we did a lot of fun things this year, talking to Bob Dylan was the best. While we were waiting, he said, "Let's go out for a drink." Even when the director came to pick us up, he said, "Wait a minute." What was it about? That was. It was about religion, religious discussion. He started saying, "Why do women these days work outside the home?" The interpreter was listening to him, because the interpreter's daughter was married. I listened quietly, but before long, I wanted to say something too. From there, the conversation turned to all sorts of things, and religious issues - it seemed to have something Jewish mixed in. So he changed religions, he did all sorts of things, he tried Buddhism, he tried Zen... he knew all sorts of things, and then the story of the Ten Commandments came up. My head, you know, (draws a big circle over her head) became like this (laughs). And that lasted for about three hours. So, when we got back to the location in Akasaka, we were still in a coffee shop talking. He said, "Come to America sometime." He said, "You can come over to my place anytime, if you want to stay over. Do you want to come and visit?" So I said, "Yeah, I'll come." Then I said, "Then come stay the night." "Oh, you have a kid too, don't you?" "Yeah." He said, "You can bring the kid with you." (laughs). In the end, we ended up kissing in the middle of Akasaka, just the two of us. I wonder why things like that don't get published (laughs).

Baisho: Don't you think that's the best? That sort of thing. We were kissing in the middle of the street, just the two of us. It was like we were comrades.
At first, neither of us spoke to each other. On the first day, hardly at all. On the second day, she would say "Yay," and I would say "Yay." Then she asked me, "Is your husband a wrestler?" and I said, "Yes." We kept talking, but then the conversation stopped again, so I started reading a book. Then she started saying things like, "How many kids do you have?" "One girl. And you?" "Five. Three boys and two girls." "What about your wife now?" "No, I'm not married right now," and stuff like that (laughs). That's how we started talking.
~~~The photo that was in "Focus" was from a scene in the video. Baisho made a very short comment.
Baisho: All I said was, "You're as big as air." It was the first time I'd spoken in a situation like that. I told her I would never say anything, so I didn't.
"When a man dies and I go first, I'll wait for a thousand, ten thousand years for you to come. How long will you wait?" "I can only wait a hundred years," she said (laughs). Isn't that great? This (laughs). It would be great if this was published. She said, "I can't wait" (laughs).
That's right, Moses appeared. It's kind of difficult, isn't it? So, if the interpreter had been a little better, you know. And it was about love, and he'd asked, "So why did you break up?" And the interpreter got angry and said, "I can't ask that, it's rude," and I said, "It's okay, I asked! I'm the one asking!" (laughs). And she said, "You never know when you'll end up like this with your husband either. So I'll wait for years." So romantic, isn't it? A poet, this (laughs). If that part had spread a little more, it would have been great. But everyone noticed Bob Dylan. He was on edge. Everyone said he wouldn't speak to them. They said they'd never seen him smile. I was totally fine with it. I was like, "What? He said that?" People in this world were like, "I can't imagine that." He was so cute. When I asked him if he wanted coffee, he was like, (nodding his head) (laughs).
I'd love to meet him just one more time. Next time, let's make sure he's in the spotlight. He'll never let me (laughs). Let's not even feature him in "Friday," he's a liar (laughs). (Into the microphone) You guys took that photo without my permission in front of my house as I was buying groceries and coming home! (laughs) I had no idea. It was right in front of my house. But it was sneaky. I never said that this was in front of that person's house. 。。。
You're really good friends with Shoken. I think he's a really talented guy. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to perform with him. And all that. (Into the microphone) I'll even go out to dinner with him! (laughs) Even if your backer is a wrestler, there are still men who will go out to dinner with you, you idiot! (laughs) I won't tell you about the next Bob Dylan performance (laughs). Oh, I guess I should tell you here.
~~~That's right (laughs).
Baisho: Are they doing a feature here? Why? (laughs) This would be turned into a scandal magazine, wouldn't it? (laughs).
But, I should have taken a picture. I should have kissed him. What a shame. I regret it! (laughs) I said, "Thank you, bye," and gave him a little kiss.
But she said, "Why does everyone in society always want to decide on a certain image? It's really annoying." He talked about himself and what kind of person he was. Also, it seems like a new religion has been born in America. There's something about Christianity, right? He said he really didn't want to belong to it. So he said, "One day, out of nowhere, I was tapped on the shoulder, and now I'm singing like a messenger," with just a guitar. "You're also an actor, and that's what God did to you, and you act like that to make everyone happy." I said, "When were you tapped? On the shoulder." And he replied, "Hmm, just now" (laughs). That's funny, isn't it? It's cute. It just makes me laugh.

Anything you've ever tried to write about and been unable to?
Yeah. Anything I try to write about, I can't do it. If I try to write about something-"I want to write about horses" or "I want to write about Central Park" or "I want to write about the Grand Canyon" or "I want to write about the cocaine industry"-I can't get anywhere with that. I have to always take it out. It's like that "Hurricane" song. I wanted to write a song about Hurricane Carter, I wanted to spread Really, the essence of it is never what it's about. It's really the message. It really doesn't come out about Hurricane. about you. Unless you're standing in somebody else's shoes you just don't know what it feels like. You don't know what it's about.
You can go to a movie and say, "What's that about?" A movie is something that gives the illusion of stopping time. You go someplace and you sit there for a while. You're looking at something. You're trapped. It's all happening in your brain and it seems like nothing else is going on in the world. Time has stopped. The world could be coming to an end outside, but for you time has stopped. Then someone says, "What was it about?" "Well, I don't know. It was about two guys who were after the same girl." Or, "It was about the Russian Revolution." Well, yeah, that was what it was about, but that wasn't it. That's not what made you stay there and stare at the screen, at a light on the wall. In another way you could say, "What's life about?" It's just going by like a movie all the time. It doesn't matter if you're here for a hundred years, it still goes by. You can't stop it.
So you can't say what it's about. But what you can do is try to give the illusion of the moment of it. And even that's not what it's about. That's just proof that you existed.
What's anything about? It's not about anything. It is what it is.
