ウェーバー『プロテスタンティズムの倫理と資本主義の精神』

鉄の檻はパーソンズーによる殻の誤訳説。

ウェーバーの『プロテスタンティズムの倫理と資本主義の精神』の最後の部分には、次のようなことが書かれていた。 

この秩序界は現在、圧倒的な力をもって、その機構の中に入りこんでくる一切の諸個人 ―直接経済的営利にたずさわる人々だけではなく―の生活のスタイルを決定しているし、おそらく将来も、化石化した燃料の最後の一片が燃えつきるまで決定しつづけるだろう。バックスター6 の見解によると、外物についての配慮は、ただ「いつでも脱ぐことのできる薄い外衣」のように聖徒の肩にかけられていなければならなかった。それなのに、運命は不幸にもこの外衣を鋼鉄のように堅い檻としてしまった。(中略) 今日では、禁欲の精神は―最終的にか否か、誰が知ろう―この鉄の檻から抜け出してしまった (Weber, 1920, pp. 203–204, 邦訳, p. 365)。 

大部分の読者にとっては、日本語で書かれているとは思えないほどに???だろう。解説すると、次のようなエッセンスが詰め込まれているらしい｡7
